01Describe the result you need
Be more specific than “I need a professional”: describe the installation, move or translation you want completed. Include the approximate scope and preferred timing.
General details are enough for a first enquiry. Share an exact address or personal documents only after choosing a provider, where genuinely needed.
02Check who you are hiring
If a Dutch business accepts the job, compare its name and KVK number with the Business Register. An extract can show the address, officials and whether the person signing is authorised. KVK registration does not prove workmanship, so check relevant experience, references and insurance separately.
For work requiring a regulated qualification, permit or professional status, verify that specific requirement in the appropriate official register. Do not give an unfamiliar provider DigiD codes, passwords or original identity documents.
03Compare like-for-like quotes
Send the same description to several providers. Ask whether travel, materials, equipment, clean-up and VAT are included, and have possible extra charges stated separately.
Compare more than the total: define the scope, materials, validity of the quote, start date and what counts as completion. A listing or review alone does not establish qualifications.
04Confirm the arrangement in writing
Agree the price or pricing method, scope, timing, warranty and payment arrangements in writing before work starts. Approve additional work and charges separately, and use a payment method that leaves a record.
Keep the quote, invoice and correspondence. If the result does not match the agreement, describe the problem to the provider in writing and give a reasonable opportunity to correct it before using the complaint route applicable to the contract.
05Act promptly when work does not match the agreement
First establish whether you hired a business as a consumer or made an arrangement with a private individual: ACM ConsuWijzer consumer protections concern a consumer-to-business contract. Compare the result with the quote and messages, take photos or video, and notify the business in writing as soon as possible. Ask for free correction within a reasonable period; the right to work that meets the agreement does not disappear merely because no separate guarantee was offered.
Do not automatically accept an extra-work charge. The result depends on the agreed price and whether you changed the task, but a business must warn you in time about additional costs. If a written complaint does not resolve the problem, check the contract terms, whether the business belongs to a disputes committee and whether legal assistance is appropriate. Reporting a business to ACM supports supervision but does not itself decide an individual dispute.
