Sports and leisure in the Netherlands

Find sport and leisure activities through local sources, compare the complete membership terms and check whether municipal or fund support can reduce participation costs.

01

Search for activities near home or work

Search by municipality or postcode and include the activity, age group and level you want. Options may include a sports association, public pool, fitness centre, walking or cycling group, community centre or informal activity in a park. Start with the municipality and local sports service. Sportmatch can show bookable local activities where a municipality or sports organisation uses that platform, but it is not a complete national list.

Ask whether a trial session is possible, whether beginners are welcome and what equipment is needed. For children, check age groups, supervision, safeguarding arrangements and how parents receive schedule updates. Availability and waiting lists are managed by each provider.

02

Check the full cost and cancellation route

Compare registration fees, monthly or annual dues, clothing, equipment, competition charges and any one-off joining fee. Read the fixed term, automatic renewal, cancellation notice and pause rules before paying. Sport subscriptions can have different cancellation terms, so do not assume that every club or gym follows one standard notice period.

You must be able to cancel in the same way you entered the agreement. If you joined online, an online cancellation route such as email must also be available. Keep the contract, cancellation message and confirmation; ask in writing if the provider applies an unexpected final date or charge.

03

Check local help with participation costs

If the total cost is a barrier, check your municipality before deciding that an activity is unaffordable. Local schemes differ. Support may be available through municipal policy, Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur for children or Volwassenenfonds Sport & Cultuur for adults, often through a local intermediary and only in participating municipalities.

Confirm eligibility, which costs are covered and whether you must apply before joining or buying equipment. A national fund name does not guarantee that a scheme operates at your address, and LiveInNL cannot determine entitlement.

04

Choose a safe and sustainable way to take part

For a club, look for clear contact details, written rules and a way to raise concerns. Ask who supervises sessions and how the organisation handles injuries or incidents. For outdoor activity, check route conditions and local guidance, and choose a pace that suits your experience.

You do not need to commit to a long membership to explore every activity: a trial class or municipal programme may be a useful first step. LiveInNL does not register users or verify individual clubs, so confirm schedules, suitability and terms directly with the organiser.
