Public transport in the Netherlands

Travelling around the Netherlands by train, bus, tram or metro? Plan every leg, match the ticket to the trip and use the correct check-in, transfer and correction route.

01

Plan the whole journey, not just the train

Use a current journey planner to compare departure times, transfers, platform changes, travel time and disruptions. A trip that combines train, bus, tram or metro may involve different operators and rules. Check the final leg, station accessibility and service updates again shortly before leaving.

Check the operator shown for every leg, not only the line number or station. A normal transfer, replacement bus and an alternative route officially advised during disruption can require different check-in instructions. Follow the current journey message rather than improvising with another operator.

02

Choose payment by the product you need

For occasional domestic travel, OVpay accepts eligible contactless debit or credit cards and mobile devices across train, bus, tram and metro. With NS, direct payment-card travel is 2nd class without a discount. A season ticket, class choice, child or group arrangement, bicycle product or international journey can need another card or ticket, so compare the product before checking in.

An NS e-ticket works differently: show it in the NS app or as a printout and use its barcode to open a closed gate; do not check in with it. A screenshot is not the accepted e-ticket format. Read the exact instructions for the ticket you bought instead of tapping a bank card as well and creating a second journey.

03

Use one payment method for one traveller

Each traveller needs a separate valid payment method or travel product. Use the same physical card or the same device to check in and out: a phone, watch and the plastic card linked to the same bank account are technically different payment methods. Remove the intended card from a wallet before tapping so another contactless card is not read.

Look at the reader display and sound rather than assuming the gate registered the action. If already on a train without a valid check-in, buying another ticket during the journey may not undo the problem; contact staff immediately. Keep the ticket available until after the final gate.

04

Check the operator at every transfer

When transferring between train operators, check out with the first operator and check in with the next at the correct reader. On a bus or tram journey, check out when leaving and check in again on the next vehicle. A transfer within the same train operator may not require another check, unless gates or the official instruction make it necessary.

Reader colours and operator names help identify the correct pole. Special instructions can apply during engineering work or replacement transport, and discount conditions can depend on the product and check-in time. Follow the disruption notice and operator instructions for that specific journey.

05

Correct the journey through the payment route you used

Review the trip and charge in the OVpay overview or app, the operator account or the ticket order. For a payment-card trip, OVpay can normally be used to correct a missed check-out from six hours after travel. An OV-chipkaart or business product follows its own operator or uitcheckgemist route. Keep the date, time, stations and payment reference; do not submit the same journey to several routes at once.

A missed check-out correction and compensation for a delay are separate requests. If the card is declined, a gate stays closed or travel is disrupted, check the live operator message and ask staff before continuing. Ticket validity, bicycle rules, accessibility, peak periods and refunds vary by operator and product.

Questions and answers

Can I check in multiple passengers with one bank card?

For OVpay, each traveller needs a separate payment method or valid travel product. Check the current operator instructions for group or child tickets.

Can I use my phone and physical card interchangeably?

They may be treated as different payment methods. Check in and out with the same card or device for the entire journey.

Do I check in with an NS e-ticket?

No. Show the e-ticket in the NS app or print it and use its barcode at a closed gate; do not also check in with a payment card.

Do I check out and in when changing train operator?

Normally yes: use the reader for the first operator to check out and the next operator to check in. Follow any special instruction shown for disruption or replacement transport.

Where do I correct a missed check-out?

Use the route for the method used: OVpay for a payment-card journey, or the relevant operator or uitcheckgemist route for an OV-chipkaart or other product.
